I just finished some render tests for the second film in the M doll Trilogy which will be titled “Do you know the way to nowhere?” The film was inspired by and got its title from this “Strange Man Band” song I made earlier this year.
This is usually how I work. I make songs that tell me how I feel and what I care about. Then those songs inspire my films.
I’ll be making the new film in Unity like M doll though I upgraded the visuals a bit by using a new shadow asset which greatly improved the look of the shadows. I also upgraded the anti-aliasing asset to the newest version which looks a bit cleaner.
They are not major changes but enough for me to notice that things look nicer. I decided against using Unity’s HDRP render pipeline as its just too buggy and limited for my super-speed filmmaking workflow in Unity. So I will again be using Unity’s “Built-in” render pipeline.
You haven’t seen “M doll” yet but digital claymation plays a big part in it. I use the asset Mudbun to do the clay in Unity and the dev is just about to improve the claymation material in Mudbun-

Claymation will be a part of the story/lore in the new film as well so I will be using that new clay material as soon as its released.
I’m using Daz characters for almost all of the actors in this film. I’ve grown to really love Daz as I’ve purchased a lot of stuff from the Daz shop. There are some great artists making characters + for Daz and they sell them at really reasonable prices.
One of the things I really like about Daz is that most of the characters you buy are morphs- that means the new actor can also be used as a morph slider. That means you can blend all the characters together- I’m using this a lot ^_^
I’m really astonished at the quality I’m getting in realtime out of Unity + these Daz models 0_0 For a “no budget” project its AMAZING 😱
Oh I also purchased some new Unity assets for some fx in the new film I worked into the story.
This is the way of the resourceful- see what you can get for your film than create the “story” and world of the film around what you can get.
The set in the image at the top of this post is from “M doll” I just used it to do some character tests. The sets in the new film will be very pixel-arty. I made a ton of pixel art materials for this game I never released so I’m going to use them in this film. It will give the film a different look when compared to M doll as well.
I should be getting the rest of the music for M doll from the musicians in the next couple of months then we will start screening it- in the meantime I’ll make a new film 😃
Filmmakers should make films so that’s what I’m doing-
P.S. we added a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Pro 6k camera + to our studio gear so we’re going to start on live action projects as well. I had a fun thought today about that- what if YOU have an idea + script + for a film you want to direct- maybe I’ll show up with a little crew and shoot it for you to direct? I’m also a cinematographer you know and my wife is a makeup artist.
