Now working on the sound fx/design for M doll + I'm going back to making live action films too
Took a break from updating Nightmare Puppeteer for a bit to do some sound work
My brain got a bit overloaded from updating Nightmare Puppeteer so after adding a test version of 3d model importing to it I jumped back into more “creative” work.
I was planning on doing a more active collaboration with my friend Tony on the sound design for M doll when I thought it was going to have normal full sound design which including footfalls and every little sound for every little thing on screen.
I decided against that as its annoying work to do 0_0 Instead I’m going with an Angels Egg-ish approach to the sound design by not having much and what it does have is pretty abstract.
Since its a very simple approach I can do the labor myself- I was able to get through 25 minutes of the film in one full days work- so I’ll be able to do the whole film in about a week-
I was going to wait until all the sound tracks are done but since I upgraded to Nuendo 11(my DAW of choice) it has these awesome auto-conform features so as long as you import an EDL from your edit into Nuendo its easy to make changes to the edit without destroying the sound design/fx timelines-
Tony made some cool sounds so I’m using those and I bought a couple really nice sound effects packs from asoundeffect.com they have a lot of really nice stuff so give it a look.
I think what has allowed me to take a more hands off/abstract take on the sound design is that I didn’t do the animation haha. What do I mean by that? Well, on my other films I did all the animation so it wasn’t very good. I know how to animate and I can make quality animations BUT the time required to do that would cause my features to take 6-8 years 0_0 I wasn’t willing to do that so yeah the animation wasn’t very good.
I always felt the animation was lacking- so I added extensive sound design to help cover up/polish the crappy animation haha.
On M doll I didn’t animate even one character animation, I bought them all from the Unity asset store. Most of them are really high quality.
Since M doll has high quality animations, the animations sell themselves, they read very well so I don’t need to smother them with sound design to try and sell them.
For the films soundtracks I commissioned several different musicians to create their own unique soundtracks.
Right now the soundtrack that is the farthest along is from the dude behind Yeltsin Is Illuminati out in Russia, here’s one of my favorite tracks of his. I hope he adds an epic change like at 1:52 of that song somewhere in the soundtrack😀
So far what he is done is AWESOME 🤩 He’s not taking the traditional approach to either the themes or the instrumentation, its really, really good and I haven’t heard anything else like it.
It really fleshes out the weird electronic dystopian world of M doll while still retaining its heart. It’s something really special.
I haven’t told him yet but I want to go to Moscow or some big city in Russia and screen the film with his soundtrack when its done. I think that would be a great experience. The screening would be free and Imagination Rabbit would pay for everything including free food and drinks 😄
At this point in my career- I’m just going to create more and more things and share them with the world for free and try to work with as many people as I can in different places- go to new places and make things there etc-
I had a pretty dark “dark night of the soul” moment recently. Afterwards I felt like an internal battle of mine had been resolved and good had won. Good me wants to make films and things that deep down want to help people somehow.
Since I’m not a Freemason and I don’t and won’t ever worship Satan I’ll never get anywhere in the film world. Nor do I need to thankfully.
I thought I never got into the film world because I wasn’t in the right family, or because I’m not a pedophile and/or a rapist. But as it turns out you need to be a stooge for a bunch of lame weirdo’s that need to conjure up demons to try and get anything done 🤣 You need to wear dorky ass clothing and use spooky sign language to get somewhere in the film world.
This realization caused me to make this recent song
I’m a Marionette that works for a higher power. I strive to be a good person, I strive to be better all the time. I try to help people and I do help the people around me. I care for nature and animals and when I’m at my best I’m making films.
It’s easy to be evil- its easy to hate- its easy to take the cowards way out and follow your lower self.
It would be easy for me to make horrible, disturbing films lacking any hope. It would be easy for me to make films to generate hatred. It would be easy for me to use my myriad of skills to stimulate peoples lower selves and make a lot of money in the process.
That’s not who I am. I’m going to be a creative force for good. So yeah, like I said I had a “dark night of the soul” type thing happen recently. In the midst of it I was sitting outside in the dark around midnight and a UFO appeared above me and blinked a few times then disappeared, my wife saw it as well if you think I was hallucinating haha.
If you’ve followed my work for awhile you’d know I was “abducted by aliens” as a child and teenager and have tons of otherworldly experiences. I still don’t know what those things were/are but I feel like there was a tug of war inside of me all these years and the good side finally won. I never gave in to the bad things, they just made things pretty miserable with the internal battles.
You might think that my work has some pretty twisted stuff in it- it does. I’m a storyteller- I’m a creator and the world we are in is pretty fucking dark so my stories reflect the world I live in. If someone is lost in the dark you have to go into the dark to get them.
You probably don’t know but I started in film with live action, really weird stuff like this and this.
Anyway, I’m getting back into making live action films as well. Imagination Rabbit is going to buy a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6k Pro rig and get shooting. I have so many ideas and live action will work better for some of them.
Also it would be so fun to shoot a couple low budget features in other countries, I can’t think of any better way or reason to travel.
I have about 25 years experience making films and everything that entails so its so natural for me to make films. I might as well just do that, a lot and everywhere haha.
I don’t even have to think about making films, its like in my DNA now- its so fast, easy, natural- I’ve gone ULTRA INSTINCT FILMMAKER but I’m not going to dye my hair gray blue 🤣
Sure, I can do a lot of things- I’m a decent programmer and programming has helped my filmmaking. Game dev fed my brain but it didn’t feed my soul. Filmmaking and making music feed my soul.
So yeh- making films- lots of films-
If you want to work on/in some of these films let me know!
