M doll: The first animated feature film made in the Unity game engine

Hi, I’m an animation filmmaker and the founder of our little studio Imagination Rabbit-

Through making games and interactive projects like our “game” that makes animations Nightmare Puppeteer we’ve learned enough about Unity to make films in it quickly and easily. Our “render farm” is a single 3090 gpu. In the past we’d have to manage small clusters of networked Pc’s for our cpu render farms. Those cpu render farms were bigger, slower and much more expensive.

Much lower expenses, much more freedom and flexibility with using C# in Unity to build out any solution we need.

We wrote our own crowd sim system in a day in Unity and leveraged the Unity asset store to purchase animations and other low cost assets. I myself am an experienced character animator but I didn’t have to animate even ONE character animation shot in our new film “M doll”.

In my filmmaking career I was offered movie deals with several big name studios including the one now famous for its founder ejaculating into house plants. The deals were all terrible and the films they wanted me to make were trash so I couldn’t bring myself to signing up with these horrible incompetent people just for the money.

I’ve never done coke and I’m not interested in “hookers” so there was no reason for me to sign up with those sad sacks.

When your entire movie studio is inside of a single PC and your method of finance cannot be censored or blocked by anyone it changes your approach to filmmaking.

We plan to continue to make original films while giving zero fucks as the tech we are using allows us to do so.

The way we are making films is something we call “IDGAF Filmmaking” we will be releasing free text and video based tutorials to share this approach with the world in hopes it helps get new original animated films made by people in places that couldn’t afford to do it in the past.
