Let's storyboard anyway
I didn't think I was going to board anymore but I'm finding myself boarding and not because I'm bored.
I did storyboard the entirety of our last film “M doll” but I ended up improvising most of the film. Because of this I thought “oh I don’t need to storyboard anymore”
BUT then I remembered that the point of my storyboarding is just to have a backup visual plan. Sometimes while improvising you can come up with some really interesting stuff, other times maybe not.
If you don’t have a storyboard and you are improvising your shots/cinematography you have to use mental energy to come up with stuff. When in production that can be draining to think up the shots and create them at the same time.
So even though it can be boring to draw thumbnails for thousands of shots I believe it is necessary to always have a blueprint to fall back on if you can’t come up with something better at production time.
Before this current nonsense swept over the world I used to look forward to storyboarding because I would do it at a local coffee shop BUT all the coffee shops here are closed permanently or only open for a few hours early in the day and require you to wear a mask over a mask over a face shield over a face shield and the restrooms are closed because of reasons.
I would love to dress up like Robocop just to get a coffee and piss myself while I’m there but yeah probably not going to do that.
Even before the current nonsense I kinda stopped going to cafe’s here because they pay the workers so little you could tell they hated their lives and hated working there and that disdain even came off them when they would serve you so I stopped going.
I was going to this fancy hotel lounge instead as it was quiet and comfortable but that hotel went out of business and yeh hotels also require you to wear a mask over a mask over a face shield over a face shield and the restrooms are closed because of reasons.
Be afraid and piss yourself they say! Go home and stay home they say!
But anyway- I’m storyboarding at my desk where I work 10 hours a day everyday- its not ideal but I have an imagination so I leverage it in situations like this.
Going for an 80’s horror movie vibe with this film so I’m going to listen to this whilst I storyboard
It always sucks to just be sitting there not knowing what to do next so storyboards are good at helping to prevent that and I really liked seeing them in the interactive version of M doll. I'm very keen to see what you do with an 80's horror vibe!
