Death Miner: Unstoppable human liquidation lottery
An idea for a story I had- how plausible is it? What would happen?
So I’ve had this idea for this story- it would be something like a Black Mirror episode-
It’s based on a fictional autonomous service or Dao called “Death Miner”
Death Miner is a fictional unstoppable human liquidation lottery built on Ethereum.
Here’s how it works in the story….
Any person or any smart contract/ai/bot can create a new Death Miner “lottery” pool and set the pools liquidation target by using a persons name/identifier etc-
Think PoolTogether pools where each pool is dedicated to raising funds to liquidate a specific target-
Now for the tech savvy out there you’re probably familiar with the concept of “assassination markets”
In an assassination market described above the motivation to accept and liquidate the target depends on the greed of one individual to motivate them to liquidate the target in exchange for currency
Also in the assassination market example it is extremely difficult to….
Guarantee the person who accepts the contract will actually fulfill it
Prove who/what actually fulfilled the contract
Death miner is different in that…
It doesn’t matter who or what fulfills the contract
Millions or even billions of people could be beneficiaries if the contract is fulfilled
So in the story- it takes place in a world where governments can kill anyone they want via drone strike with little to no repercussions
The rich and powerful can hire assassins to kill anyone they want via the old two shots to the back of the head suicide trick
So in the world of the story… governments/rich/powerful can kill anyone they want with no repercussions- the common people cannot.
The goal of Death Miner in the story is to democratize that process.
Normal people often fear the government/rich/powerful because they can kill anyone they want at anytime. The gov/rich/powerful do not fear the common people because the common people do not have the same ability until Death Miner gets released.
With Death Miner ANYONE can open a liquidation lottery pool on ANYONE, it doesn’t matter how “important”, rich or powerful the person is or isn’t.
So person X creates a pool for person Y, person X or anyone else can deposit funds into the pool. The funds are paid out to beneficiaries of the pool when the contract is fulfilled.
Now here’s the magic piece that capitalizes on the unlimited amount of human greed in the world to make it work…
ANYONE can attach themselves as a beneficiary to the pool, free of charge.
When the contract is fulfilled- it doesn’t matter who or what does it- the funds are distributed to all of the beneficiaries equally.
In the story a “proof of death” oracle is invented to check if a particular person is dead or alive, in the real world of today a prediction market could be used for a similar function.
In the story a group of evil “untouchable” people have been running the world, doing all types of horrible stuff to the common people and until Death Miner comes along they have nothing to fear.
Once Death Miner enters the story. People open up pools for the “untouchables” The funds in the pool quickly swell to the hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency.
The target of the pool has a choice to pay a “ransom collateral” to the pool which is distributed to the beneficiaries and prevents the pool from going “live”. It is a new type of life insurance.
They can also choose to go into hiding and disappear forever.
Most of the targets don’t pay or go into hiding, they instead try to fight Death Miner but they can’t shut it down or turn it off. They try to prevent people from accessing it but they fail.
Millions of desperate people that have suffered in the world the untouchables have created sign on as benefactors of their pools and wait for the targets to die. Some choose to help expedite the process.
As each contract is fulfilled the common people literally receive free money as they cheer on the deaths of the untouchables.
How realistic do you think this is? If the masses of people could receive 10k,100k+ in free money if some rich/powerful person died would they do it?
They would be signing on using pseudonymous wallets then anonymizing their funds using something like Tornado Cash or Zkmoney so no one would know how they got the funds so they wouldn’t get into trouble.
How do you think this would play out?
In the story people are in such financial and psychological despair they don’t hesitate to join the pools and help fulfill the contracts. People work together to make sure the contracts are fulfilled.
Housekeepers, bodyguards, assistants, sons, daughters of the untouchable betray them and sign up for the people and help others fulfill the contracts. Literally everyone the targets come in contact with could receive money if they died creating a hellish, trust no one world for them.
Soon autonomous killer drone networks spin up as literal “Death Mining pools” are created to streamline the liquidation process.
In the short term the masses cheer as free money drops into their wallets with each target that is liquidated.
Before long all the untouchables have been liquidated- then they move onto corrupt politicians as targets, then celebrities- it eventually becomes a world where fame is avoided as being too “powerful” or famous paints a target on a person.
Later in the story…. creators of “Death Pools” have the option of a time limit on a pool and when it expires all the funds in the pool are burnt- this add’s an extra incentive to liquidate the target because if it doesn’t happen the funds are lost forever.
Here’s a fake Death Miner commercial- will this be a real thing by 2030?
Eventually the world literally becomes decentralized- you don’t want to become too big, too rich or too famous as the death miners might come for you.
People live in small communities and mind their own business. No one wants to be super famous or become a billionaire anymore. Companies remain smallish and serve the small communities.
Morality is enforced in a way by Death Miner as everyone knows if you do bad things you might end up as a pool’s target.
Also in a way the world inside the story becomes a “zombie movie” for the pool targets as everyone is literally out for their blood since they stand to profit from it.
What do you think of this story idea? How do you think something like this would play out in the real world?
If Death Miner was created what would happen?
Do you think anything could stop human greed? Why wouldn’t the people open and join the pools? What could the rich/powerful do to stop Death Miner? Shut down the internet? Disable the power grids?
I sort of see something like this happening in the real world that’s why this story idea feels a bit creepy 0_0
Human greed in a world lacking morality is a terrifying unstoppable beast, so far only the rich and powerful are able to capitalize on the powers of this beast.
If something like Death Miner was created the beast would be free to be put into the service of anyone and I don’t think the world would ever be the same once that is possible.
What do you think?
Death Miner sounds like the democratization of assassination, which if a sizeable portion of average used it, would be a great equalizer.
It's basically Death Note but on the blockchain from how I see it.
That honestly sounds like a world I'd like to live in. If that was a global thing, the Schwaubs, Soros' and Epsteins of the world would have their days numbered.
Most people want nothing more than to live an easy average life, even if it means bowing to authority. If something like this could enable them to live the same lifestyle, and create "meaningful change", then they'd choose the new model.
